2015 VW GTI purchased July 2015. Had numerous rattles, squeaks, etc. Then look what literally just fell out of my dashboard and onto the floor of my pedal box....

Kinja'd!!!

I’m sure it’s not structural, but are you serious? I’m guessing this is the culprit of the obnoxious dash vibration between 2500 and 3000 rpm (and that happens when I go through the gears EVERY. SINGLE. TIME). My NVH issues so far are as follows

1. The above causing a rattle in my lower left dash

2. Vibration between 2500-3000 rpm (probably soundkador)

3. Sunroof squeak (dealership FINALLY fixed in October)

4. Passenger seat squeak that is louder than the radio over uneven pavement (and I live in Michigan so.... everywhere)

5. Rear seat squeak (likely seat belt sensor ball I can’t do a damn thing about)

Oh and best part is I told them about the rattle that was caused by this little guy in the photo in October and they “couldn’t find anything”.....

In case anyone was wondering why I’m so unenthused with my GTI (among other reasons unrelated to the above but likely exacerbating my negative opinions).

Yeah first model years are always BRUTAL. Had a 2015 C Class loaner that I swear was put together by blind oompa loompas, the build quality was pure crap. 2016 is light years ahead.

Yeah and I kick myself every day for my decision. My old Saabaru was on its last legs (that point where magically brakes, tires, water pump, etc all need to be replaced simultaneously and it was starting to rust at the quarters so not worth the investment), they had great lease deals pre-diesel gate, and I knew they’d been produced in Europe since late 2013 as MY2014 so told myself they’d worked out the bugs... thank god I only leased and not making that mistake again. I used to think people who always complained about rattles were ridiculous but, at least on this scale, I cannot take it anymore and would trade it in tomorrow if I could.

If I were you, stay on the dealership to fix it. I wouldn’t accept a SINGLE rattle in my C300 lease, not one. They fixed the only 2 I’ve ever had but I was SUPER nice about it and ALWAYS came with a case of beer for my Service Adviser and whoever was working on the car that day.

I figured, if warranty is covering everything $20 on beer won’t bother me.

Very good point, I have a FANTASTIC SA (or did until he moved sadly) at BMW for my 335is who I always took care of ($100 gift certificate for Christmas as a thank you twice) and went beyond above and beyond for me and got stuff taken care of he didn’t need to, always got me interesting loaners, kept my car inside, etc. I admit I’ve reached the “fuck it” level with this car (my first lease so I keep telling myself it’s just a lease)but you’re right I just need to stay on this one and get them to get everything right. The SA is a really nice guy, he’s just not gone above and beyond like my guy at the BMW dealer did... perhaps I should start it off on my end this time.

Yea, first year is always a gamble, especially the early months. I bought two first year vehicles new (1994 Acura Integra & 2015 Ford F150), both were/have been flawless so far.

Though both were bought in Sept/Oct of their model years, close to the next model year introduction. So a lot of the bugs were probably shaken down by then.

That was my hope by buying the 2015 GTI with a June 2015 production date (almost a full year after initial SORP). Most Germans do running changes throughout, but maybe because it was a new plant and issues VW held off for a set of model year changes... or that’s my guess at least.

What kind of interesting loaners did he give you? I had a manual 320i as a loaner once, that was the most interesting loaner I’ve ever gotten.

I bought a 2015 Golf in September 2014 (delivered Oct 26, one of the first month or 2 of production in Mexico) and apart from a squeaky latch on the armrest storage bin (easily fixed with lubrication) didn’t have a single issue with it in 50K km. This despite lowering the car, putting bigger wheels and tires with stiff sidewalls on it and autocrossing it regularly (~15 events over 2 summers).

Sorry about your bad luck, I hope the car gets sorted for you.

Amusingly, the WRX I’ve bought to replace the Golf is the first non-first year car I’ve ever had. The ‘04 Mazda3 that preceded the VW was a first model year car as well and other than the rust (which that whole generation of the 3 is bad for), it’s needed nothing other than, oil, filters, brakes, a pair of struts, a set of spark plugs and a couple of light bulbs in reaching almost 300K km. Normal maintenance. While definitely a beater at this point, it’s still in the family.

Hmm, as a former Volkswagen Golf owner, it sounds like you got off light. If your car isn’t on the side of the road with a mechanical issue, you got one of the good ones.

You got a manual?!?! Wow, you win the lottery for most interesting loaner. They don’t even stock anything but AWD automatics (except for M’s) up here (all BMW drivers here are either enthusiasts who order their cars or lease special badge wannabes).

I’ve had a number of 335 sport lines, 328's, a 4-series when they first came out, and since I met my current fiancée he got me a series of X-series for her to drive around for the day. So more interesting than most in the sense I got a 4 when they were brand new and 335's rather than 320/328's but they don’t stock a 2 series loaner sadly.

All it is has proved to me is how uninspired and dull the F3X is no matter the trim or spec.

That’s what I’ve heard and why I leased it. It’s still had the telltale VAG electrical gremlins even this early. Nothing serious, but enough to make your skin crawl at the thought of what will come after the warranty expires (like the one touch up down randomly doesn’t work on the windows, or the infotainment doesn’t boot up on a random start).

They were deciding on what car to give me as a loaner, and the service guy goes your car is a manual, right? You want the manual loaner, and I was like what you have a manual loaner? Yes, I need that. So I got a 2015 320i M sport with a stick in it for a day. I was talking to the guy about it, I guess at one point they had a manual X3 loaner as well, BMW of Corpus Christi must be run by an enthusiast.

I actually got a 228i as a loaner back in Feburary from BMW of San Antonio. It was alright, I really do not like electric power steering.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. My 2007 MKV GTI went 115,000+ miles and 5 years without a sqeak or rattle when I traded it. I also had none of the gremlins and the only thing I had to replace the whole time was a driver side drive shaft.

That is so fantastic, I would kill for our dealers here just to have a loaner on the lot (look up Erhard of Bloomfield Hills and be prepared to be disappointed). I honestly never knew the X3 came in a manual, I thought it was only the first gen X5 (E53 IIRC).

Yeah, the steering is abysmal... Or I guessed it had to be as bad as the 3-series. I’m likely replacing the GTI with a CPO ‘16 B8.5 S4 manual when my lease is up in summer 2018, but I’m really hoping the G20 fixes the many current problems and I’ll keep the S4 for just a few years.

The did make an X3 with a manual, not sure through what year, but they do exist .

I’ve driven a current 2, 3, 4, and 5 series, I’ve hated the steering in all of them. That said, it is miles better than electric steering from Hyundai/Kia. It does seem that it is getting better thought, hopefully the trend continues.

I’ll be damned... then again I could count on one hand the amount of things I took the time to learn about the X-series, I want a fast wagon with a manual for a daily (I want an M sport E91 badly). Irony of the universe is I’m a PM for safety systems on the next gen X3/4/5/6/7 programs (I work for a Tier 1).

It is a weird paradigm we live in when a Cadillac (with the same base line ZF rack) has better feedback than a 3-series. Granted, I haven’t driven a truly great electric rack yet, I need to get my buddy to let me drive his dad’s GT3... Though reviews have said it’s the best electric rack but still nowhere near the last hydraulic racks. I know the F-series are first gen but the G30 reviews haven’t been glowing, though BMW hasn’t been as ardent about what they stand for of late. Probably middle 2020's we’ll get decent steering racks. Considering how bad hydraulic was at first I’m sure this will take 30 years also to perfect. I don’t know enough people in steering but need to start bugging them about it.

There are so few E91 M sport manuals out there, I think it’s under a 100. EAG had one for sale at like 40k. They eventually put it on ebay and it sold for like 27k, so that seems to be what the market price for one is, if you can find it at all.

It’s gonna take awhile to get electric steering right, but hopefully with people like Porsche and BMW working on it, hopefully it’s sooner rather than later. I was talking to one of my parents friends from the neighborhood yesterday about what he was going to do about cars. He was lamenting the fact that 997 GT3 prices are way up because people like the steering and gearbox in the 997 as compared with the 991.

There are a few, I think it was 400 LCI M-sport RWD manuals, it goes up significantly if you include AWD. The issue is the people who bought them knew they were the last and they were like what I would have been in that position at that time and they’re just not selling them and NO ONE leased them. Problem is that being in a salt crusted state a lease or 2 year old CPO makes so much more sense for a daily. Subjecting one of those rare beauties to salt would make me cringe every day.

Yeah, the 997 was another pinnacle. From all those I talk to with more experience in such things the 991 may be faster but the 997 will be remembered like the 993.

I had no idea that there were that many E91s, still makes it a rare car. Took me 2 months of searching to find my car, and BMW sold 1055 LCI E90 M3s with a 6MT.

They only sold 1055?? Well I suppose I’m thinking of all E9X M3's and the E92 likely had a much higher take rate. I know they only made 717 335is manual coupes total (only 200 E93's if I recall).

Yeah, the uptake on other E9Xs were higher, and 1055 is only in the states, but I figure you assumed that. I see a lot of 335is’s running around, they’re probably all DCT though. My dads 135is is a DCT, they didn’t make of those with either transmission.
